Fat Tuesday!!!

There's something to be said for partying in excess before lent, even if you're not Catholic. Of course I have never really celebrated Fat Tuesday or given up anything for lent but I can see the appeal. It's kind of like pigging out on all your favorite foods right before a diet.

I’m feeling better today. Perhaps it was the two huge Iowa steaks Tim grilled for dinner. There is something to be said for steak and potatoes. Or it could be the new mixture of herbs I got on Monday. They are bitter! She warned me, but Blech! It was hard getting them down, but I felt better today, so who knows. I'm still getting acupuncture treatments twice a week, and thanks to my friend Angie, I've started counting the needles when I go in for treatments. So far the most has been 15 at one time. Although the other day, I made the mistake of saying I had some drainage problems with my nose and the next thing I knew I had a needle stuck between my eyes, one at my hairline, and one at the top of my head! It seemed to work, although it hurt to smile when they were in! It was pretty funny.

Powerful penne...

Everyone is fighting a cold/flu lately, and I feel crappy as well. Hopefully I'm not getting anything! Blech... It's stormy too, tons of cold wind and rain, which doesn't help.

I could be feeling sick from the penne pasta with vodka cream sauce I made on Saturday. I followed the directions (mostly) except I used 3-1/2-cups of my homemade eggplant marinara sauce, which seemed to soak up the 1-1/4 cups of Stoli vodka. Cooking it down ¼ of the way and then adding 2/3-cup of cream was supposed to lessen the affect of the vodka, but it didn't seem to do the trick either. It was a great dish if you like to drink your dinner. Every forkful was an inhalation of vodka, and the cream sauce was quite rich. Hilarious really! Poor Tim, all he could say was "Well, you have to try new things once and awhile." He's such a good husband to put up with me. He didn’t feel sick after eating it, so perhaps it’s not the pasta and I’m just fighting a bug. The vodka probably killed whatever bug was trying to make me sick, and I'm just fighting off the last of it.

No news on the BMP. The other day Tim mentioned that I might want to think about at what age I should start getting rid of any baby things I have. (Well-intentioned family members have created wooden cradles and sleds, crocheted hats and blankets, etc. over the years, and I have bought/saved a few clothing pieces I thought were just too precious to pass up.) I guess someone he was talking to said that she got rid of everything when she turned 40 and wasn't married. Oh the things to look forward to!

Hopefully acupuncture will work on getting my kidney-yang in line, and this won’t become an issue. Otherwise I have to decide if I want to do a cycle of IVF before I completely give up trying. We’ll see…

Karma

It was a gorgeous Friday morning, the sun was out, the birds were singing, the air was crisp and I was looking forward to a nice relaxing weekend. I was driving to work in the truck, as usual. When a cop decided I didn't stop to his satisfaction at a 3 way stop, and that in his eyes I needed to be punished. So out he speeds out from behind the Suburban he was parked behind, and pulls me over. I stated the obvious, that I stopped and verified the intersection was clear and then continued. And I pointed out I even saw him hiding behind a parked suburban. (I'm thinking if he knows that I was alert enough to see him, I wasn't "blowing through a stop sign oblivious" like he depicted.) He said it didn't matter, it wasn't a stop my tires rolled, and who cares if the intersection was clear. (I'm like HELLO?!? No one was in danger, there weren't cars, pedestrians, or even bikers on the street, I wasn't speeding, or reckless, and I stopped! But he went back to his car and made me wait 15 minutes while he ran my plates and information, and then when he found out, I wasn't a criminal, prostitute, or wanted terriorist he wrote up a "citation". So either I waste a day in traffic school to make sure the trumped up ticket doesn't go on my record, or I go to court to fight the ticket, or I just bite the bullet and pay the insurance increase and wait until I really f-up to go to traffic school. ARGH!!!!!

I was SO pissed/sad! The worse part is I started crying while parked on the side of the road while he was writing up my ticket, and couldn't stop for over 1/2 an hour! What a mess!!! So I was late to work, but I figured I was no shape to be driving or greeting people @ work if I was sobbing hysterically! The most bizarre part is, I think cops usually have to give you a paper ticket when you sign something. This one didn't. So I signed a paper that I couldn't read through my tears, and have no clue what the fee was or what it said! After I signed the "citation" the cop 'dutifuly' asked if I was going to be ok and I sobbed "Yeah, just leave me alone and go give a ticket to someone else." And guess what?!? I saw him pulling over a mini-van not 5 minutes later. Bastard!

So will I get even more bad Karma for telling him to go pull someone else over? There is a dark cloud forming over my head...

Garage Grumblings...

Last night, I was over at our neighbor's helping her look over her re-model/home addition plans, and noticed that the location of a door they had that connected their home to the garage would swing in and broadside any car parked there. I pointed this out (in case they ever wanted to sell their home) and I was informed that it didn’t matter because in California no one parks his or her car in the garage, and we are strange for doing so or even thinking that way! “Only mechanics need a garage in California”, she went on to say, almost haughtily. (This coming from someone who almost parks on the grass because birds hang out in the tree above their driveway and dirty her car.)

Now don’t get me wrong, I like our neighbors, but here’s my problem; I don’t believe we’re freaks for parking our cars in the garage, and was shocked she (and the rest of her group) felt otherwise. Granted, Tim and I snuggle two cars into a small “California sized” two-car garage—but they fit, and it prevents us from stacking up the garage with a bunch of useless crap and clutter. I know most of our clients have at least a 2 car garage built, (if not more) and they actually use them for cars, so perhaps only the “freaks” in California who like their cars use their garages.

The other thing that bugs me is that since almost everything you can think of is stored in their garage, our neighbor believes they have WAY too much closet space, and “Why would a house be built with space above the closets that you don’t use?” I’m thinking… "Um, because people park in the garage and thus need storage space inside the house?!?" I realize in comparison our closets are packed full of clothes and storage items. I would love to have an attic or place to store holiday linens, paperwork, rotate seasonal clothing, etc, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to displace two cars to do so!

The whole thing rather perturbed me and got me thinking about the “California Culture’’ of our neighborhood. Many people subscribe to the “pack your garage full” philosophy. Although some do manage to cram their stuff to either side and park at least one car in the middle. If there still isn’t room for their cars, they seem not to have a problem storing a car or two on their front lawns. (Unfortunately, the cars on lawns are usually older, and tend to become permanent lawn ornaments.)

Now, I realize that other areas also have people that do not take care of their yards or have their own lawn car lot, but it's usually the exception not the norm. Today, when I looked around the place we call home, there are so many people on our block that haven’t painted their homes in eons, that allow their yards grow long and then turn brown in the summer from lack of water. Many of their hedges and trees are overgrown from not cutting them. (But at least they block the cars parked on the lawns.) The not taking care of your lawn is comedic, because it’s usually the homeowners that are the worst offenders. Most of the renters in our neighborhood take care of the places they rent. (Or their landlords make arrangements to take care of things.) And I know in other (dare I say, more up-scale) towns, people still take pride in their yards, and it’s actually pleasant to meander through the streets past their well manicured yards and admire the colors of the flowers.

But back to my pet peeve of the day…not using your garage. I can understand if a person is renting (or someone who had to purchase a small place that they could afford) they may not have enough space for everything, but to re-model and still not use your 2-car garage for parking?!? As a former mid-westerner this drives me NUTS!!!! Last I checked, most people are not freaks when they say a garage is for vehicles, and in most places in the country people actually use their garages to park their vehicles in. Not to mention take pride in their lawns…

Its times like these I am tempted to move somewhere saner!

February Flowers...

It almost feels like summer today. There are tons of flowers out, and everything is green. We sat outside and drank choco-tini's while the laundry whirred in the machine. Since our washing machine is in the garage, I prefer to wash when it's sunny, so I don't get cold and wet every time I go outside to check on it. Oh the things I would do if I owned the house... As it is, I'm content to help our neighbor plan the re-model of their home. For the time being at least.

It just keeps getting better...

Ok, so I just learned the song I like was the best country video in 2005!!! I was talking to my Dad and somehow we got on the subject of the Toby Keith song I have on my iPod, and he said the video was great. Since he doesn't listen to country a lot either, I had to go find it... the song "As Good As I Once Was" is on CMT. It totally made my day.

Seems like Summer...

Although it's still COLD in the morning, the afternoons have temps in the 70's and it makes me want to skip out of work early! Spring fever is here! It definitely helps my outlook on things!

Of course we spent Sunday watching the Super bowl. YEAH Steelers! After watching Bobby Flay on the Food Network earlier in the week, I decided to make lamb chili with avocado relish. I altered his recipe a bit to accommodate the ingredients we had on hand. I used ground lamb, blond bock instead of dark beer, 3 whole dried pasillo peppers instead of ground, and some dried cilantro and cooked it all day in a crockpot. When it was about done, we both took a spoonful of chili to taste it to see how the peppers worked out for us, and the seasoning slammed the back of your throat like an angry mob and burned the entire way down. (We both had scooped up some of the concentrated oil on top; poor Tim turned immediately red and croaked "it's good".) So Tim siphoned the oil off, and I added a bit of honey to it to round out the flavor. Then the chili was very rich and flavorful, and although spicy not too bad. (For us anyway, since we like spicy.)

I then made some avocado relish per Bobby's recipe. (Which except for the peppers, was adjusted to accommodate a smaller portion.) The relish was designed to cool off the chilies a bit, and it was a lot like guacamole, except he added jalapeno peppers. So I grabbed a couple of Serrano peppers that were in our freezer. The avocado tasted great on chips, and we put some in the chili, not realizing the peppers had habanero pepper oil on them. So much for cooling off the chili, we couldn't figure out why it was so hot again! Until we realized it was the red chilies hiding in the avocado mixture. (At that point I was really glad I didn't put chili peppers in the corn muffins I made!) It's probably good we didn't have company, as I don't think most people could handle it. Next time I freeze the peppers we grow I'm definitely going to freeze the habaneros separate.

All in all it was pretty funny!
