Memory Lane

My mom surprised me with a visit this weekend! She hadn't been out since 2003, so a trip "over the hill" to the ocean was in order. The last time I drove along this stretch of the winding PCH was the day my grandmother died in 2006. I didn't bother to mention that to Mom, but I thought of my Gramie a lot as we journeyed along some of the same roads I traveled that day. (albeit the reverse route) I didn't feel compelled to go along the stretch of highway that I was driving along when I suddenly felt that she had died. I think that's one journey I will make when I'm alone.

This weekend's drive was somewhat cool and cloudy, but the sun managed to peek out of the clouds a few times. We saw quail, seals, and tons of sea gulls in our travels, and had a lovely time just pulling over to check out the flowers, surf, and sand. As I drove I had forgotten how much I missed the beauty of the coastline just over the hill from our valley of technology. Hopefully it won't be years until I drive over the hill and enjoy the coastal curves of the Pacific Coast Highway.
