Chicken Cravings...

I spent the day at W & E's house, and I couldn't help but admire their gorgeous chickens! (Hubbards Golden Comets) Their feathers are absolutely gorgeous up close, and they are so SOFT!

Emma has done a wonderful job with the girls, they are so cute, and tame! They all started out perched on these drying lawn chairs, but they quickly noticed they had an audience and came running over. (Thus the action shot.)

I am so itching to get a few birds of our own. I love Easter Eggers (hybrids that lay eggs in various shades of green and blue). My Aunt had some and they were so much fun! Tim is one who would rather have a nice little red hen and thinks I'm asking for high maintenance, mean chickens.

I've done my research, and the ones I like are no more aggressive than the red breeds. (Not to mention these would be hand raised "pets". I think getting a red one for Tim, a few Easter Eggers, and perhaps a pretty black one (Australorp) would be just about right. I also think Marans sound cool (chocolate colored eggs) but don't like sound of the pigmentation process. I think it would be great fun to have a mini-flock. Plus, the chicks would help in the yard as well as the kitchen. E & W are living in our old rental, and the yard was notorious for lacking nutrients. The free range chickens have taken care of that! The yard looks absolutely amazing~and very well groomed!

I have wanted backyard chickens for years now, and we always manage to have an excuse why it isn't feasible. Granted I would have to get better about cooking all things egg, and we'd have to worry about composting the waste, and keeping away predators. At the same time, it would be a wonderful adventure. :-)

I also got my thyroid test results back today. The level is down to 0.85. Hopefully that's low enough for the Dr, and we can discuss the next steps. With cutbacks at work, we'll have to do some creative financing this round, but then again, I'm no spring chicken either, so had better press forward. Who knows, maybe I can cure my longings for child and chicks this year.
